The Lego Batman Movie

SPOILER-FREE MOVIE REVIEW

NANANANANANANANANANA BATMAN!

Hello guys and welcome to my first review of 2017 and also to the first 2017 movie I've seen. I'm glad to say that we are off to a flyer this year.

The Lego Batman Movie is a spin-off to 2014's The Lego Movie (which I didn't manage to see), starring the vocal talents of Will Arnett as Batman, Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Michael Cera as Robin, and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, just to name a few.

I had absolutely no idea what to expect going into this movie. I didn't check the trailers out much and I practically had not much knowledge of the movie and its plot at all. After reading and watching some very positive reviews about the movie, however, my interest was gained and I quickly utilised my off-day from work to go watch the movie a day after its release in Singapore.

I'm very happy to report that The Lego Batman Movie was arguably the most fun I've ever had with a movie, apart from random screenings of the laughably terrible Batman & Robin (1997) which I watch from time to time just to laugh at how bad it is.

Not saying that the movie is laughably bad, mind you. In fact, the movie is absolutely brilliant.

From the get-go, the audience is introduced to this wonderfully colourful universe filled with such vibrant energy and joy. The movie is also very self-aware of what it's trying to be, and that aids in making the experience even more fun.

The story is very interesting and at the same time doesn't take itself too seriously. What we end up getting is such a fun story filled with ingenious character motivations which were hilarious and yet brilliant.

The lightness of touch goes hand-in-hand with the style of humour in this movie, which is one that throws joke after joke and gag after gag at great pace and frequency, making for an absolutely hilarious experience.

This cause is helped by the excellent voice acting of the entire cast who truly encompass the spirit of their respective characters with such lively and energetic vocal performances. I mean, even Ralph Fiennes managed to sound interesting as Alfred when narrating.

What's more, the humour used in the film is very meta, similar to the style of Deadpool with its self-referential jokes as well as brilliant fourth wall-breaking references to other movies or events of which The Lego Batman Movie had in abundance.

This does lead me to perhaps my only issue with the movie, and it's a very minor one at that. Come to think of it, I would have to be extremely nitpicky to find any other faults I had with it.

The issue I had was with how the jokes just kept coming and there were times where the full effect of the joke made didn't get as good a reaction as it could have because there were too many other jokes that came before it that were just made in too quick succession.

Some other movie goers may have an even bigger issue with the references and jokes than I did but mainly because they don't understand them. For me, I'm a huge Batman fan and for someone like me, I had a brilliant time with the vast majority of the references because of how hilarious they were.

That is seriously the only problem I had with the movie.

As a result, I can conclude this review a lot faster than I would normally do for any other average movie.

All in all, The Lego Batman Movie was an extremely fun movie which is not only great entertainment for children but is also equally, if not even more entertaining for older peeps who understand the brilliant references scattered all over the film.

By making use of the freedom Lego animation allows, they portrayed such a fun version of Batman and such a fun DC universe which is not only extremely refreshing but also a nice contrast to the tonally darker live action DC movies.

They also made full use (and I mean FULL use) of the sheer number of characters at Warner Bros' disposal. I mean, just have a think about how many iconic characters are owned by Warner Bros. A stroke of genius, if you ask me.

2017 is off to a great start with this one and I really had a blast with it. Go watch it, guys, it's really great fun.

8/10.
