Deadpool

SPOILER-FREE MOVIE REVIEW

This movie had standards to live up to.

Not just any standards, mind you. These standards were astronomically high after that appalling and painful portrayal of the character of Deadpool (also by Ryan Reynolds) seven years ago in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Well, boy oh boy did this movie live up to them.

After spending more than a decade in developmental hell, we finally get the Deadpool movie that we frankly deserve.

The film wastes no time in getting right into the story, and that kick-starts a fast-paced, laughter-filled hell of a ride.

The story itself is not groundbreaking or something very new. The story is simple and easy to follow.

What distinguishes this story from the rest, however, is the manner in which it is told.

I felt that the narrative in Deadpool was outstanding, where it makes use of a couple of flashbacks instead of the conventional chronological style.

Now, flashbacks can be a very effective tool in storytelling. Most of the time, however, flashbacks end up ruining an entire movie.

Take 2014's If I Stay, for example. That film made use of so many flashbacks which did more to jumble up and confuse the narrative than to tell a story clearly.

Deadpool's use of the flashback though, was masterful.

It kept me hooked, and it didn't confuse me either.

The pacing also helps to keep things flowing and exciting. It really is a very fast-paced movie, filled with intense action and some wonderful gags here and there.

There was never a dull moment in the entire movie.

I feel that the writing team who came up with the script deserve a very special mention.

The dialogue and the humour in this film was outrageously marvellous.

Never have I ever laughed throughout an entire movie, with Deadpool though, it damn nearly happened.

I found myself laughing every 10-15 seconds, and if I wasn't laughing, I was grinning like an idiot.

It was witty, hilarious and just very appropriate for such an inappropriate character.

Speaking of inappropriate, boy am I glad that they didn't think twice before placing all the obscenities, gore and violence in it, and that's just awesome.

It makes the whole movie experience even better knowing that the people who made this movie didn't give two shits about censorship laws and whatsoever.

Kudos to them, and keep it up.

And let me just talk about the cast, and in particular, Ryan freaking Reynolds.

Oh my word, was he born to play Deadpool or what?

Talk about perfect casting, man. Reynolds is the only actor who could have pulled off the wise-cracking, big-mouthed mercenary.

He showed in his performance just what it means to him to finally be able to give the fans and the world a taste of what Deadpool really is.

Reynolds also shared fantastic chemistry with his co-star, Morena Baccarin, who plays Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool)'s love interest.

The love story too was done very very well.

As with the tone of the entire movie, the romance was handled with plenty of crudeness which all the more served to form not only a very apt love story, but one that is also very welcome and not at all weird.

The supporting cast of X-Men recruits Colossus (Stefan Kapičić) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) also did a fantastic job, playing their respective characters with a little fun twist.

As for the film's main baddies, however, I felt that this was the only area in which the movie was lacking.

The main antagonist Francis Freeman/Ajax (Ed Skrein) was just average in my eyes, and could have been better.

His sidekick Angel (Gina Carano) was menacing, but I felt her character could have been featured or developed a tad bit more.

Doesn't really matter too much though, as they did get the job done in the end.

Huge praise goes to the film's director, Tim Miller.

This was his directorial debut, can you believe it? And boy, did he deliver.

All in all, Deadpool more than lived up to every expectation set.

The movie was everything that it needed to be, and not just that, it was far better.

It was hilarious (way funnier than many comedies I've seen in recent times), smart, witty, exciting and intense due to the fast pace.

Damn, was it a good time all-round.

Oh, and for those who have yet to see it, there are a couple of post-credits scenes at the very end, so do stay to watch them.

Awesome movie.

9/10.
