Everything You Need To Know Before Watching SPECTRE - Part III

Skyfall (2012)

Skyfall marked a return to form for Bond after the horrendous excuse of a Bond movie in the shape of the dismal Quantum of Solace.

In Skyfall, we move away from the Quantum story arc (for now, at least), as Bond deals with a villain from M's past.

The film opens with MI6 agents, Bond and Eve in pursuit of mercenary Patrice, who had just stolen a hard drive containing the identities of every agent undercover in terrorist organisations all over the world.

The pursuit begins by car, then motorcycle - after which Bond chases Patrice onto the roof of a moving train.

As the two battled it out, Eve positioned herself within range to be able to take one shot to wipe Patrice out.

She hesitates as the possibility of hitting Bond instead was extremely high, but M orders her to shoot, after which Bond plummets down from the bridge into the water, to his "death".

Patrice gets away with the hard drive.

Three months later, M's handling of the situation comes into questioning by the Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee, Gareth Mallory.

As a result, M is pressured into considering retiring from her position as head of MI6.

What follows is a cyber-terrorist attack on MI6 headquarters in London, which results in the building going up in flames, as well as the deaths of six operatives.

The attack motivates Bond to "rise from the dead", and he returns to London where he attempts to settle his differences with M after her call which led to him being shot.

MI6 relocates to an underground facility/bunker, dating back to World War II.

After some physical and psychological tests, M tells Bond that he's fit for active service, but in reality, he failed the tests.

Bond is also equipped with a new gun and a radio transmitter device from the MI6 Quartermaster, known as Q.

Bond then follows a trail which leads him to Patrice, and then to the film's main antagonist, Raoul Silva, who is a former top MI6 agent who was abandoned by M in a trade for six agents.

He was the man behind the attacks on MI6 earlier on.

Silva seeks revenge, and while Bond got closer and closer, he continued leaking the names of the undercover operatives on the Internet a few at a time.

Being held captive by Silva on his island lair, he explains to Bond all he's been through as well as putting Bond through an... unconventional means of torture.

Bond manages to free himself, and he overpowers the guards. Bond also activates his radio transmitter to call for backup, and they take Silva back to London.

Back at the new MI6 headquarters, Q hooks up Silva's computer to try and see what it contained, not knowing that Silva's computer ended up hacking into MI6's system.

Meanwhile, M attends a public inquiry by the Minister with regards to her handling of the hard drive situation, as well as her being responsible for the deaths of many undercover agents around the world.

The hack ends up releasing Silva from his cell, and he escapes the bunker and into the Metropolitan system.

Bond realises it was all part of Silva's plan to be captured, as he intended to confront and then kill M, whom he resents for leaving him to die many years ago.

Bond chases Silva through the London Underground, before stalling Silva together with Mallory, Tanner and Eve as he storms the courtroom. He fails to kill M, after which he leaves.

Bond brings M to a secluded garage in the company car, where he reveals his classic Aston Martin DB5. The reason in swapping vehicles is because the DB5 doesn't contain a tracking device, meaning Silva cannot ambush Bond, wherever he is going, and can only follow.

Hence, Bond uses M as bait as he drives to his childhood home in Scotland, Skyfall.

Silva follows as Bond tasked Q with leaving a trail of electronic breadcrumbs for him to follow.

At Skyfall, Bond, M and the estate's gamekeeper Kincade prepare the house for an imminent attack by booby trapping the place. Bond also parks his DB5 with the front facing the door as his car contains a few optional extras.

The trio fight off the assault, despite M getting wounded.

Silva starts setting the house on fire by throwing grenades in, as well as using his attack helicopter to destroy Bond's DB5.

Kincade and M proceed to a chapel further away through a secret tunnel inside a priest hole which connects the house to the chapel.

Bond detonates two gas canisters with dynamite to destroy the house, and the debris hits the attack helicopter Silva arrived in, causing the pilot to lose control hence crashing it straight into the house.

Silva survives the blast, and spots the torchlight beam from Kincade and M in the chapel. He sets off after M on his own, with most of his men killed.

Bond is delayed in going to save M due to being intercepted by a henchman, and while he's held up, Silva points the gun at both heads to kill both of them at the same time.

Before he can, though, Bond arrives in time and throws a knife into Silva's back, killing him.

However, he's too late, as M bleeds out and dies in his arms.

Back at the office, MI6 relocate once again to a building reminiscent of the classic MI6 setup from the early films. Bond meets his new boss, Gareth Mallory, who assumes the role as the new M.

We are also introduced to Eve, whose surname is revealed as Moneypenny - she becomes M's secretary.

Miss Moneypenny is a classic Bond character, along with Q. Both these characters were missing when the series was rebooted.

So that wraps it up! The three Daniel Craig Bond movies explained. I hope that my explanations made adequate sense, and I hope they help in your understanding of the franchise and the story arcs leading up to SPECTRE.

Oh and one more thing.

What is SPECTRE?

SPECTRE stands for:

SPecial
Executive for
Counter-intelligence,
Terrorism,
Revenge and
Extortion

They are a global terrorist organisation which appeared in the earliest Bond films back in the 60's. The reason why SPECTRE suddenly vanished from the series was because of legal disputes over the ownership of the rights of the name and the organisation.

The rights were finally won back in 2013, many many decades after the dispute started with 1965's Thunderball.

The head of SPECTRE is a criminal mastermind by the name of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Bond's ultimate enemy. He is like what the Joker is to Batman.

Here's a good video which explains who SPECTRE are:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gquuLbOLiM

Who is who?

The MI6 team:

James Bond
M (Bond's boss)
Q (Gadget man)
Miss Moneypenny (M's secretary)
Bill Tanner (Chief of Staff)

Okay, so I think that's adequate information.

Hope all of you guys enjoy SPECTRE as much as I will.

Cheers:)
