Pitch Perfect 2

SPOILER-FREE MOVIE REVIEW, PITCH.

Today, I shall review 'Pitch Perfect 2', the sequel to the 2012 smash hit.

2015 just gets better and better for the film industry - we've already been treated to some terrific movies this year like 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' and 'Kingsman: The Secret Service'.

'Pitch Perfect 2', however, failed to add to the growing list of good 2015 movies.

Why did it fail, you may ask?

Well, for starters, the movie felt pointless. I felt that the only reason this sequel was made was because of the guaranteed success at the box office.

The story takes place three years after the events of the first movie, and that time gap isn't explained well at all.

There are new recruits, but their stories aren't explained at all. That void feels very weird and it took me out of the film for a bit.

This gap sets the tone for the rest of the film, as the pacing is very choppy.

The choppiness is probably due to the weak script and at times awkward dialogue. Shame, really.

On to the characters, and the whole gang is back - together with a handful of new faces.

Seeing the Bellas back together again was very welcome, as they filled me with so much joy in the first instalment. In the sequel, though, the Bellas lacked the chemistry they once had in abundance.

I felt that they could have included a segment to inform the audience of what happened in the past three years instead of jumping right into the chase.

Anyway, to the cast. Anna Kendrick was terrific as usual, although I didn't like how they didn't develop her character. Emily Junk (Hailee Steinfeld) is a new addition to the Bellas, and she's excellent.

Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) is awesome and even funnier than before, although her jokes become stupid and unwelcome later in the movie.

Same goes to Flo (Chrissie Fit) who was funny, but the jokes ran dry later on. The rest of the cast was alright. Nothing special.

I find the film rather racist towards numerous groups too.

There are many racial stereotypes that make for good laughs if mentioned once and at most twice.

In the film, though, these racial stereotypes and racist jokes were used so often that it got annoying and maybe even offensive.

On to the more positive points of the film.

Probably the best thing about 'Pitch Perfect 2' is the fantastic music.

I never thought they would be able to surpass the brilliance of the music in the first film, but they did.

There's an original composition by Hailee Steinfeld's character which is absolutely beautiful, and the other a cappella is wonderful.

The film is also a lot funnier than the previous instalment, and that's a welcome change.

That's about it for the praise. Maybe I'll add on to say well done to Elizabeth Banks - whose directorial debut is this film. The film isn't great, but it's not totally bad.

Should you watch it? Well, yes, but only to follow the storyline.

'Pitch Perfect 2' is a disappointment.

6/10.
